As well as running great NLP courses in Hampshire and Dorset for people who like to think for themselves, Pegasus NLP also provides a lot of free information on the applications of NLP – including our NLP Newsletter, our two main websites, and this Blog.

The blog is written by me, Reg Connolly, and as you read the articles remember that none of them are ‘true’ – they are not carved in stone but are merely my current views and interpretations.

The Map is not the Territory

In NLP we have a saying, or ‘presupposition’ which goes ‘the map is not the territory’.  Now if you’ve done an NLP course you’ll be nodding wisely at this and very clear, no doubt, about its meaning.

If you have not done an NLP course ‘the map is not the territory’ simply means that anyone’s description of something is simply their current view or opinion or prejudice – it is not true, it is not reality and it is open for discussion.  And because we all view things in at least slightly different ways my view will differ from yours and yours will differ from someone else’s and so on – and they will all be, ideally, open for discussion :-)

But I’m right

People who have fixed or rigid views are mistaking the map for the territory; they truly believe that their’s is the ony true view or interpretation.  They will argue this – and will often seek out and spend time with other people who have similar views so they can support one another and strengthen their shared belief that they are right.

Please leave comments

Although, at tghe time of writing, I may consider the articles to be erudtie and ‘true’, they are simply current opinions and up for and open to discussion – so do please make your comments on what you read using the form at the end of each article.

(To prevent spam, adverts for exotic products, and blatantly self-promoting messages each comment is first checked and approved – however this is usually done very quickly and within hours of your comment being made.
